The mighty blue marlin visits our waters as the water temperatures reach 20ºC which varies year to year, but the first fish are usually encountered in July and they stay till the sea cools again, usually late October.

Most of the fish are large females with a healthy average size of about 250kg with manny much larger fish being caught each year.

The mahi-mahi or common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is a surface-dwelling ray-finned fish found in off-shore temperate, tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Also widely called dorado and dolphin depending on where you come from, it is one of two members of the Coryphaenidae family, the other being the pompano dolphinfish. Mahi means very strong in Hawaiian.

These usually appear with the marlin and are a welcome addition to the days fishing. Generally not specifically targeted, but we always carry prepared spinning rods in case a pack of these hungry acrobats is encountered.

White marlin, these smaller cousins of the blue marlin arrive slightly later than the blues most years usually in early August and stay till late October though some have been caught in November.

Averaging about 30 kg and easily reaching 50 kg these brightly colored acrobatic speedsters are a real treat on light tackle, often entering the spread in packs and double hook ups are common.

They are known to frustrate anglers the world over with their uncanny ability to through the hook as they repeatedly jump and tail walk in to the distance.

In recent years the blue fin population has shown a huge recovery and that is very evident in the huge shoals of fish seen of the coast in the past 2 seasons.

We are placed in the perfect position for there migration out of the med and back into the Atlantic Ocean, this usually occurs mid June till August but some fish have been caught September and October whilst trolling for blue marlin.

The size of the fish are always large with an average of well over 200kg.

They can be targeted by trolling or chunking with live baits or chunks on the hook.

80 lb tackle is the norm here with fights usually lasting between 2 and 4 hours.
